Before using the activities with students, become familiar with the Color Rules page and the Q & A page. Notice how colors show the many different sounds that vowels can represent.
- Use the Alphabet Rhymes online pages to help students learn the letters of the alphabet. These can be copied and printed for reference.
- Download, print, and play one of the Reading with Color Bingo games. These games focus on words from a specific reading passage, also included. Each Bingo games has 32 unique cards so that an entire class can play! With the Bingo instructions are hints to say as you read each word. Because of these hints, students do not need to already know the words before they play the Bingo games. Use pennies or small counters as game markers.
- Download and print the Matching Cards on heavy paper. Or, print them on standard paper , cut out the words, and tape them to index cards that have been cut in half. Have students sort the cards to make matching pairs. Or, make a duplicate set and use the cards to play concentration or other matching games.
- Make a sentence from word cards and then mix up the cards. (The 100 common word cards will be very helpful for this activity.) Give the cards to the student to unscramble. Or, have students use word cards to make up their own sentences.
- Make printouts of some of the Stories in Color pages from the website. Have students use colored markers to trace over the letters that you are studying. For example, say the words with short "a" sounds and have students trace the letters with an orange marker.
The Reading with Color method can be an effective way to show the structure of English to older students who are new to learning English. It is effective with just a few weeks of instruction!
